The winter season can take a toll on the roof of your home because of the heavy weight of snow and falling debris that collects on it during this time. This is why, when the winter season is over, you want to be sure that you clean it up well to ensure that the buildup and slight damages done during the winter are taken care of and do not cause further damage. Here are four tips for taking care of your roof after the winter season:
- Remove Debris in the Corners and Cracks: During the winter, debris can gather in the corners and cracks of your roof that will need to be removed. You don't want any ice trapped underneath this debris to continue to sit there because it can cause water damage and cause large cracks in the roof. Be sure to wear gloves to remove the debris so that you are not getting any dangerous bacteria on your hands that can make you sick.
- Clean the Gutters: Since lots of debris gathers on the roof during the winter season, this debris can also gather in the gutters. It's important that the gutters are cleaned, especially before spring showers start. You want to be sure that the rain can be smoothly drained from your roof instead of being stuck on the roof behind built-up debris. Be sure to wear gloves when doing this, as well.
- Inspect the Shingles: During the winter, storms and high winds can cause damage to the shingles on your roof. In fact, some of them may have even ripped and flown off. This means you may have to replace some of the shingles. If you don't inspect the shingles, it can lead to further damages that are going to ruin the stability of your roofing structure.
- Check for Mold: During the winter, once the snow begins to melt, it can leave water buildup in some areas of the roof that can lead to mold growth. Mold growth on the roof is not something you want because it can damage the roof. The mold can even get into the attic of your home and eventually cause your home to smell. If you notice mold growth, hire professionals to remove it safely and thoroughly.
When you follow these four tips, you can be sure that you roof is well prepared for the spring months ahead. If you aren't comfortable doing some of these tasks on your own, be sure to hire professionals who have the right tools, strength and experience to take care of it for you.
