No matter what type of siding you have on your house, it can become dirty or damaged. This can make your home look unkempt and a bit trashy. Even if you are not selling it, you should take pride in how it looks to others. In addition, if the siding is damaged, it allows insects, mold, and mildew to get underneath it and damage the wood. This will require a lot of extra work to fix, and could cause your family to become ill. Here are a few easy tips for keeping the siding on your home in good condition.
Keep any trees, bushes or shrubs around the house trimmed. Any branches that tough the siding should be removed. As the wind moves them. They can scratch or tear at the siding. In addition, any leaves that rest against the house create a place for mold and mildew to grow. Eventually, it will grow under the siding and start destroying the wood.
Cleaning the siding is not a hard chore. You can use your garden hose and a long handled deck broom. If your house is two stories or more, you will need a ladder too. Spray an area with the hose and then scrub it with the broom. You can apply a cleansing agent to the broom to remove heavy dirt, mold, or mildew. Rinse the area and then move on to the next one. This can be done once a year, but should be done any time you notice mold, mildew, or an accumulation of dirt.
Any time you notice a crack, chip, or hole in the siding, you should repair it. Using a zip tool, unlock the damaged piece from the one below it. You can then cut out the damaged area. Relock the piece. Apply a line of adhesive caulk to the back of the patch and then place it over the part you cut out. Make sure the new piece is larger than the area you cut out so there is an overlap.
It is easy to overlook a problem with the outside of your house because you see it every day and most problems start off small and grow. Make sure you take the time to walk around the house and really look at the exterior on a regular basis. The sooner you find and repair and issue, the smaller they will stay. You may be surprised at how having a nice looking home makes you feel.Share
